What “Percentage Decrease” Means
A percentage decrease tells you how much something shrank, compared to where it started. As with an increase, the comparison is what matters: dropping by 12 is a big fall from 80 but barely a dent from 8,000. So we measure the drop as a fraction of the original amount, then turn it into a percent.
The bars under the calculator show it: the original value, then the new (smaller) value, with the part that was lost highlighted in red.
