Total: 69 (tip 9) Tip 15% of 60 = 9.

How a Tip Works

A tip (or gratuity) is a percentage of the bill added on top to thank the person serving you. You work it out like any percent - bill times the percent - then add it to the bill for the total. If a group is sharing, split that total evenly between them.

The bar under the calculator shows the bill (blue) with the tip added on (green), so you can see how much the total grows.

Tip Formula

tip=bill×percent100total=bill+tipper person=totalpeople\begin{aligned} \text{tip} &= \text{bill} \times \frac{\text{percent}}{100} \\ \text{total} &= \text{bill} + \text{tip} \\ \text{per person} &= \frac{\text{total}}{\text{people}} \end{aligned}

How to Use It

  1. Enter the bill amount.
  2. Enter the tip percentage you want to leave.
  3. Set split between if more than one person is paying.

FAQ

How do you calculate a tip?

Multiply the bill by the tip percentage. For a 15% tip on 50: 50×0.15=7.5050 \times 0.15 = 7.50, so the total is 57.5057.50.

What is a normal tip percentage?

In the US, 15–20% of the bill is common for table service. Norms vary by country and service, so adjust to your local custom.

How do you split a bill with the tip included?

Add the tip to the bill, then divide by the number of people. A 72 total split 4 ways is 724=18\frac{72}{4} = 18 each.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Both are common. Tipping on the pre-tax amount is slightly lower; many people tip on the total for simplicity.
