Three Ways to Find the “Middle”

The mean, median, and mode all answer the same question - “what is a typical value in this list?” - in three different ways:

  • Mean is the everyday average: add everything up and share it out equally. If a few friends pooled their money and split it evenly, each share is the mean.
  • Median is the value right in the middle once the numbers are lined up in order. Half the list is below it, half above.
  • Mode is simply the value that shows up most often.

The range measures spread instead of center - largest minus smallest. The dot plot under the calculator drops each number onto a line so you can watch the mode stack up and see where the mean and median fall.

The Formulas

FAQ

How do you find the mean, median, and mode?

The mean is the sum divided by how many numbers there are. The median is the middle value once the numbers are sorted (the average of the two middle ones if the count is even). The mode is the value that appears most often.

What is the range?

The range is the largest value minus the smallest. For 3, 5, 7, 7, 9 the range is 93=69 - 3 = 6.

What if there is no mode?

If every number appears the same number of times (for example, all different), there is no mode. The tool shows “none” in that case.

Can there be more than one mode?

Yes. If two or more values tie for the most frequent, the set is multimodal and the tool lists all of them.
