What “Simplifying” Means

Simplifying a fraction means writing it with smaller numbers without changing its value. $\tfrac{18}{24}$ and $\tfrac{3}{4}$ are the same amount - the bar under the calculator shades exactly the same portion either way - but $\tfrac{3}{4}$ is far easier to read and work with.

The trick is to divide the top and bottom by the same number, as many times as you can. Doing it in one step means dividing by their greatest common factor: the biggest number that goes into both.

How to Simplify a Fraction

To simplify a fraction, divide the numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor.

$$\frac{18}{24} = \frac{18 \div 6}{24 \div 6} = \frac{3}{4}$$

The value of the fraction does not change. Only the way it is written changes.
