Fraction Calculator

3/4 1/2 + 1/4 = 3/4.

What Is a Fraction?

A fraction splits one whole into equal parts. The bottom number (the denominator) says how many equal parts the whole is cut into; the top number (the numerator) says how many of those parts you have. So 3/4 means “cut the whole into 4 equal parts, take 3 of them.”

The bars under the calculator show this. Adding fractions means stacking the shaded parts together; if they spill past one full bar, the answer is more than one whole (an improper fraction like 3/2).

Fraction Operations

This calculator can add, subtract, multiply, and divide two fractions. Answers are simplified automatically.

Formulas

For addition and subtraction, use a common denominator:

ab+cd=ad+bcbdabcd=adbcbd\frac{a}{b} + \frac{c}{d} = \frac{ad + bc}{bd} \qquad \frac{a}{b} - \frac{c}{d} = \frac{ad - bc}{bd}

For multiplication:

ab×cd=acbd\frac{a}{b} \times \frac{c}{d} = \frac{ac}{bd}

For division:

ab÷cd=ab×dc\frac{a}{b} \div \frac{c}{d} = \frac{a}{b} \times \frac{d}{c}

FAQ

Why simplify fractions?

Simplifying makes the answer easier to read. For example, 6/8 and 3/4 are equal, but 3/4 is simpler.

Can a denominator be zero?

No. A fraction with zero as the denominator is undefined.
