What This Calculator Does

A mixed number like $2\tfrac{3}{4}$ is just a whole number sitting beside a fraction - “2 wholes and three quarters.” An improper fraction like $\tfrac{11}{4}$ says the very same thing as a single top-heavy fraction: eleven quarters is two whole pizzas plus three more quarters.

They are two ways to write the same amount, and this tool flips between them. The bar under the calculator fills past the “1 whole” line, so you can see why $\tfrac{11}{4}$ spills over into 2 wholes and a bit.
