What This Unit Price Calculator Does

The bigger box is not always the better deal. Unit price cuts through the packaging by reducing everything to one fair number - the price for a single unit (per litre, per 100 g, per item). Divide the price by the quantity, and now two packages of different sizes can be compared head to head.

Compare the two unit prices — the lower one is the better value, as long as both quantities use the same unit.

Item B is the better value at 0.6 per unit. Another case: 3 for 500 g is $0.006$ per gram, while 5 for 1000 g is $0.005$ per gram — the larger pack wins here.

How do you calculate unit price?

Divide the price by the quantity. For 4 over 6 units: $\frac{4}{6} = 0.6667$ per unit.

How do I tell which is the better value?

Work out the price per unit for each item and pick the lower one. Make sure both quantities use the same unit (both in grams, both a count, and so on).

What counts as a “unit”?

Whatever the quantity is measured in — items, grams, ounces, or litres. Just keep the unit the same for both items being compared.

Does a bigger pack always cost less per unit?

Often, but not always. Comparing unit prices is the only reliable way to tell.
